Gumloop
AI agent platform for companies: build, share and govern agents (GTM, support, CRM, research) connected to company tools, plus a personal agent 'Gumball'; usage billed in credits at cost plus a fee.
Why it's here: AI agents/automation platform with a historically generous credit-metered self-serve free tier and strong product-led growth into team plans; a contrast for credit metering and team upsell.
How they turn free users into paying ones
Gumloop has dropped its free tier. Google sign-up asks for Gmail send and Calendar edit access up front (optional at Google's consent screen), then four explainer slides, then a hard gate: the only way into the product is a card-backed 14-day Pro trial that converts automatically at $37/month. Trial-to-paid is therefore opt-out. Once paying, usage is billed at the AI providers' list cost plus an 8% fee, and when the 20k monthly credits run out agents stop until the user switches on pay-as-you-go (default ceiling $5,000). Larger accounts are steered to Enterprise through spend-governance features and 'Book a demo'.

Monetization mechanics
| Trial / free offer | 14-day Pro trial, card required, auto-converts to $37/month (checkout: 'Try Gumloop Pro Plan, 14 days free, then $37.00 per month', total due today $0.00). |
|---|---|
| Card required | Yes (to get past onboarding at all) |
| What free actually allows | None. After a short onboarding (4 explainer slides and an attribution question) the last step is a hard gate: 'Start free 14-day trial' or 'Sign out' / 'Delete account'. There is no free tier to fall back to. |
| How usage is shown | [DOCS] Running credit cost shown live next to each chat's name in the chat header, with a per-category breakdown drawer (Chat & Reasoning, Tool Calls, Compute, Orchestration Fee, Brain...); credit logs in Settings > Usage & Limits; Insights dashboard (Enterprise only). Emails: 'Out of Credits Notification' on by default, usage alerts at 75% and 90%. |
| Discounts & annual nudges | No annual toggle or promo. '12,600 bonus credits' framing (more than half of Pro's 20k is labelled bonus); Enterprise 'discounts available' on the 8% orchestration fee. |
| Sales assist | 'Book a demo' on every page with a multi-step contact form (work email, company size, what to automate) (step 9); Enterprise with optional embedded Gumloop expert and dedicated Slack support; Gumloop University, workshops, learning cohorts and 'Hire an Expert'. |
| Time to value | Not reached: the product is gated behind a card-backed trial right after onboarding (~2 minutes in). |
| Aha moment | Shown, not experienced: explainer slides on triggers, artifacts (dashboards/decks), each agent's own computer, and learned 'Skills'. |
| Account used | Google sign-in with a real company Google Workspace account Nikhil signed into the Composio cloud browser (identity scopes only; name and email masked on screenshots). Earlier throwaway-email attempt kept as context. |
| Geo note | USD; no geo redirect observed. |

Paywall triggers
- Google sign-up asks for Gmail 'read, compose, and send' and Calendar 'edit and delete' scopes at account creation (optional checkboxes; step 6)
- Final onboarding step: 'Try Gumloop Pro to access unlimited agents, any model, and 300+ connectors' with only a trial button (step 13)
- Stripe trial checkout requires a card (step 14)
- [DOCS] Over 20k monthly credits: agents stop until pay-as-you-go is enabled
Upgrade prompts & copy
- Landing/pricing 'Get Started' / 'Start 14-day free trial' / 'Book a demo'
- Onboarding gate 'Start free 14-day trial · $37/month after your trial. Cancel anytime before your trial ends and you won't be charged' (step 13)
Lifecycle emails
- None arrived during the run.
What Kite could take from it
- Show the live cost of each conversation in the header with a breakdown (model, tools, compute, fee); this makes credits feel fair and supports usage-based upsell. Kite could show credits spent per task in the thread.
- Default usage alerts at 75% and 90% plus an out-of-credits email, all on by default, are cheap, trust-building conversion moments Kite should copy.
- When the allowance runs out, offer opt-in pay-as-you-go with a user-set cap rather than a hard wall or a forced plan upgrade.
- Gumloop's Google/Microsoft-only sign-up with a card up front filters for business buyers but removes casual trials. Kite's card-before-trial ladder is a similar bet, so watch the drop-off at the card step.
Caveats: No card was entered, so nothing past the trial checkout was seen. In-app usage meters and pay-as-you-go prompts come from docs.
